1960s Gordon Bunshaft & Davis Allen SOM Steel Dining Table Honed Marble 44 in
This is a dining table, originally designed by Gordon Bunshaft and Davis Allen of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM). This particular example was produced in the 1960s and represents an exceptionally rare and significant design. The table features Bunshaft’s signature cruciform leg structure, originally conceived for his Manhattan apartment and documented in period photographs by Ezra Stoller. Bunshaft himself owned a closely related example with a rectangular top; this version differs in its square format.
This table originated from Skidmore, Owings & Merrill’s Chicago office and was acquired from a furniture liquidator who purchased a substantial portion of the firm’s furnishings years ago. To date, this is the only known example of this specific Bunshaft / Davis Allen table design in existence. While many works are broadly attributed to Bunshaft and Allen, this piece is more firmly driven by Gordon Bunshaft, supported by early photographic documentation and the presence of the design in his own home.
The table is constructed from solid stainless steel, cut, welded, and hand polished. The top is a 3 cm thick honed (satin) marble slab, recently refinished and in near-immaculate condition.
The table measures 44.25 inches deep, 44.25 inches wide, and 27.25 inches high. This piece shows minimal wear consistent with age and careful use and remains in very good overall condition. Please see photos.
